“I feel like Creator has answered my prayers for an interconnected reclamation of traditional medicines, honorable cultural preservation, and the Ancestral knowledge that the language of our plant relatives gift us.”
- Tribal Community Event Attendee, June 2023
An important aspect of the Naa káani Native Program is the Tribal community events hosted multiple times per quarter. These events aim to create a strong sustainability culture through sharing the importance of making decisions that balance long-term considerations with short-term needs. Indigenous Peoples have maintained this balance since time immemorial, which leads Naa káani to see sustainability as an achievable state rather than an ever-receding aspiration. The design of Naa káani’s programs, performance, criteria, goals, and stories all contribute to successful continuity through our protocols and ceremonies which convey our values.
Our TMP Community events centered around Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) aim to help teach this balance, and include topics ranging from learning traditional plant uses, craft making, cultural knowledge, medicine practices, and more. By teaching attendees these lessons, Naa káani hopes to increase access and knowledge of Indigenous traditional medicines, as well as increase Indigenous cultural representation in an educational format, create a sense of community, and connect people with their Indigenous heritage. One community event attendee said it best, stating, "This cultural gathering helped connect generations and allowed us to learn, gain a sense of place, spirituality and participate in unity."
