Welcome
Naa káani is a Tlingit word for a person or entity which serves as a connector and go-between for different people and cultures. At the Naa káani Native Program, we aim to embody this definition as we unite, uplift, and enhance the lives of Native Americans while promoting understanding and cooperation among all cultures in our shared journey toward a healthier, more inclusive future.
The Naa káani Native Program recognizes the deep cultural conflicts that exist between mainstream society and Native peoples. Consequently, we advocate for equity and social justice so that we can enhance lives, build resilience, and contribute to the survival of all, within as well as outside of the community.

What We Do
The Naa káani Native Program was formed in 2017 after the American Friends Service Committee laid down its’ Northwest Indian Program. AFSC supported the former staff and committee members in forming a new nonprofit organization to carry on work grounded in the roots of sixty years of service to Pacific Northwest Native American communities.
Governed by a committee composed mostly of members of Native tribes, Naa káani’s priorities reflect the perceived needs of Native communities. We discern these through frequent contact and involvement with our partner organizations. Learn more about our organization’s history. |
Our Story
The Naa káani Native Program (NNP) is a Native-led 501(c)(3) with the goal to provide programs that are grounded in Indigenous knowledge. Through these programs, the NNP aims to bring traditional and western medicine together and transform the current way that people (especially the Indigenous population) access and experience healthcare in King County.
NNP conducts a series of events throughout all the seasons through our Traditional Medicine Program (TMP). We're currently in partnership with the University of Washington (UW), School of Medicine, Indian Health Pathway Program’s Traditional Indian Medicine Program (TIMP). The UW’s TIMP prepares both Native and non-Native medical students for careers in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) health. Check out our programs page to learn more about this program, as well as others hosted by the Naa káani Native Program. |
